Safety Notice
Subject: SAFETY NOTICE: Muting of protective fields
Products and product serial numbers: This Safety Notice comprises all MiR500 and MiR1000 robots
Issued by: Claus Jørgensen, Safety & Compliance Manager
Date: April 27, 2022
MiR500 and MiR1000 have an option for user-configurable muting of obstacle detection by the safety scanners for the side, front and back fields. This is an option that is useful when a robot needs to drive close to an object, for example, a load transfer station. After an evaluation of the instructions and promotion materials, MiR has determined that this could be misleading and could cause a risk for the users.
The potential misunderstanding is that part of the protective field remains active without a compromise in reliability as specified. The reliability cannot be determined for the affected function with the current design. When muting part of a protective field, there is no active safety function for obstacle detection, including the detection of a human.
This information must be taken into consideration when performing the site risk assessment and in determining the risk reduction means that need to be applied during the commissioning and operation.
MiR recommends the following:
To minimize the risk for injury due to a collision with a human, MiR urges all MiR500 and MiR1000 customers to review their risk assessments and ensure that risks are reduced if muting is used.
Guidance on making a risk assessment is found in the Risk Assessment Guide on the Support portal. Go to the Support portal > Documentation > Manual > Risk Assessment Guide 1.3. Annex A in the Risk Assessment Guide provides examples of alternative risk reduction measures.
