How one of world’s largest automakers increased productivity with 3 MiR robots

The world’s 5th largest automaker saw increased productivity after implementing autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) in its plant in Valencia, Spain.

Ford’s strong global legacy is built on its innovative approaches to manufacturing, and with one AMR able to free up to 40 work hours a day, Ford was able to utilize its workers’ skills in areas they could add the most value.

Challenge

Ford Spain makes 2,000 vehicles per day in its Valencia plant. In an increasingly competitive automotive landscape, they needed to increase productivity, quickly and without disruption, and without compromising on worker safety.

Approach

First Ford implemented a MiR100 and then another two. This autonomous mobile robot has a payload of 100kg which meant it could bring spare parts and welding materials to workers and robotic stations, without getting tired. Not only could the robot survive a hostile environment, its ease of use and autonomous navigation system, meant it was fast to get up and running and could avoid unforeseen obstacles. No training or additional infrastructure was needed.

Outcome

Each robot removed up to 40 work hours a day of repetitive, time consuming, non-value tasks. This allowed employees to take on more complex and engaging tasks. Ford Spain soon implemented two more MiR AMRs.
